In science computer models enable us to understand phenomena, such as turbulence in fluid, that were never understood before. For society threats to mankind, such as a possible climate change or limits to the availability of food and unpolluted fresh water, can be explored with computer models. Science is necessary to accumulate the insight needed for these models. On the other hand scientists can not work without computer models to handle their complex knowledge. However, with those models old scientific questions are back on the stage: how valid is the knowledge provided by the models ? How are the facts of the world related to those models ? How sound is the logical reasoning in the models ? There is not an easy answer to such questions. The logic of science which seems adequate for a number of old(fashioned) ways to describe and explain the world, shows its limitations when it comes to the surprises of computermodels. This book is dealing with the challenge posed by computermodels for science. Each year the Dutch Federation of Social Science Methodology (NOSMO) discusses actual (methodo)logical problems. In 1997 one of the themes reflected was the question of the validation of knowledge generated by computer models. Authoritative lecturers from different disciplines (inside and outside of the social sciences) were invited to explain how they dealt with this question in their field. The written examinations of that sessions were starting points for …

Comparison of Efficiency for Hydrological Models (AWBM & SimHyd) and Neural Network (MLP & RBF) in Rainfall–Runoff Simulation (Case study: Bar Aryeh Watershed -Neyshabur)
For suitable programming and management of water resources, access to perfect information from the discharge at the watershed outlet is essential. In most watersheds, the hydrometric station is not available; then, different models are used to simulate the discharge within watersheds without data. The selection of preferred model for rainfall- runoff simulation depends to the purpose of modelin...
متن کاملRiver Flow Simulation Using SWAT Physically Based Model in Barandouzchay of Urmia Lake River Basin
Nowadays, there are too many models in the world for simulation of hydrological processes, such as the SWAT physically based model. The SWAT model is a continuous and physically based hydrologic model that is the smallest unit in this model is Hydrologic Response Unit, and all hydrological processes are simulated in each of these units. This model can simulate runoff, sedimentation, erosion and...
متن کاملEffects of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) Spatial Resolution on Hydrological Simulation
Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...
متن کاملAN APPROACH TOWARDS WAVE CLIMATE STUDY IN THE PERSIAN GULF AND THE GULF OF OMAN: SIMULATION AND VALIDATION
This article describes the 11-year wave simulation (1992-2002) in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman using the input data derived from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The ECMWF 10 meter wind field and spectral wave boundary condition at 18 ْN degree are input into one of the latest versions of numerical wave models (3rd generation) after a few local modifications. ...
متن کاملSimulation and Model Validation of Batch PHB Production Process Using Ralstonia eutropha
Mathematical modeling and simulation of microbial Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production process is beneficial for optimization, design, and control purposes. In this study a batch model developed by Mulchandani et al., [1] was used to simulate the process in MATLAB environment. It was revealed that the kinetic model parameters were estimated off the optimal or at a local optimal point. There...
متن کاملSimulation of Hydrological Balance in Eskandari Watershed Using SWAT Model and algorithms SUFI2
In order to manage watersheds, especially in mountainous areas that are not adequately station hydrological phenomena simulation is important. In this study, the SWAT model used to simulate hydrologic basin Eskandari. Calibration and validation of models for the periods 2006-1992 and 2009-2015, respectively, using the algorithm SUFI2 in software SWAT CUP was done. To evaluate the simulation re...
